Portable toilets have been around for generations – for much longer, in fact, than most of us might realize. Historians tell us that the first known toilet facilities date back to the third millennium B.C. although portable versions didn't come around until long after that.
The portable restroom industry began in the 1940s in the shipyards of Long Beach, California. Workers there were using valuable company time by leaving their work areas and walking up to the docks, every time they needed to go. Someone came up with the brilliantly simple idea of converting a beach-style cabana into a portable toilet, and a new industry was born.
Portable toilets have historically been simple units made of just a few essential parts: a lightweight, enclosed toilet area that can be brought to remote sites, with a sanitation system that is emptied at regular intervals. But many modern portable toilets these days are equipped with the latest features and modern amenities; the more advanced ones include an auto flush, flash lights, deodorizers, mirrors, and much more.
And manufacturers with an eye toward innovation and the future are developing new portable sanitation units all the time. Once such innovator is Charles W Howard CallAhead, the President and CEO of Call-A-Head in New York. His company have developed luxury portable toilets, many of them built on themes such as equestrian, nautical, and one of his most ambitious, one that is modeled on the Palace of Versailles. That particular unit is perfect for formal events where the number of patrons greatly outnumbers of the existing facilities. Its design was inspired by a visit to the Palace of Versailles in France by Mr. Howard and his wife, who were so impressed they decided to design a special event restroom trailer to emulate the grand palace for their fellow New Yorkers.
